A Ballakermeen High School student has more than doubled his target amount for charity by raising £5,500 after walking the Raad Ny Foillan.

Jake Hodgson, aged 13, from Douglas, completed the coastal route at the weekend within three days of setting off from the Sea Terminal early on Thursday morning in the direction of south.

The walk was in aid of the Rebecca House children’s hospice and also in memory of Jake’s grandfather who died of cancer.

He said: ’It wasn’t too bad but I couldn’t walk this morning (Sunday) when I got up.

’I got to the Sea Terminal around 9pm on Saturday. We found out that I had done 30 hours of walking.

’My sister made me a nice certificate which read "Go Jake, go Jake, go!" for when I reached the finish line.

’A few friends were also waiting for me there.’

Jake, who would pick an outdoor activity over playing computer games any day, told the Examiner that he ended up doing 102 miles on the 100-mile coastal footpath as he ’got lost on a few paths’.

’The paths were nice, but some were hard to walk on and the fields were also nice to walk through,’ he said.

’Overall, it was quite tough and it was monotonous after Fleshwick bay because it was just miles of beach.

’My feet are a bit sore today and I have some blisters and my ankles are also a bit swollen, but I found the experience quite interesting and fun.

’I’d probably do it again, but just at a leisurely pace.’

His advice for those wishing to complete the Raad Ny Foillan is: ’Don’t give up.

’Try and get a good pace and enjoy it. The people walking with me told me to keep drinking and to eat to keep my energy up.’

Jake surpassed his target of raising £2,500 due to the generosity of the public.

His dad, Craig, said: ’Ballakermeen High School have confirmed that they will be adding £1,000 to his total, so that will mean over £5,500 to date he will have raised.’

Jake thanked everyone who supported him, including his dad Craig, Danny Ward, Lee Nottman, Sarah Morgan Jones, Robbie Collister, David Doyle, as well as Dave Parsons and his mum Lisa who set up the tents for him.
