For the first time since its launch in 2013, the organiser of the Harbour2Harbour Walk Janet Bridle, will take part in the 2019 community event.

Instead of carrying out her on-the-day organisational duties, Janet will be donning her walking gear and trainers for the nine mile stroll, setting off from the former Marine Biological Centre in Port Erin and finishing in Castletown Square.

In preparation for the event, Janet, who is also Southern Community Initiative (SCI) project co-ordinator, has been taking part in SCI’s Southern Striders running and fitness group sessions.

The group, which includes all ages and abilities, meet every Saturday morning under the guidance of two volunteer fitness instructors to improve their general fitness and socialise with like-minded people.

Janet said: ’It dawned on me that although I’m always there on the day to coordinate volunteers and ensure everything is running smoothly, I have never actually completed the walk myself! I thought that simply wasn’t good enough so I have signed myself up and am looking forward to getting outside on a spring Sunday morning and enjoying a scenic walk along our beautiful southern coast.

’I’ve been out and about with the Southern Striders on a Saturday morning and also getting some training walks in so I’ll be ready for the event come May. For anyone concerned about their fitness levels, please don’t worry. The walk is suitable for all ages and abilities and is not competitive - there is also a shorter route for anyone who feels unable to complete the full nine miles.

’As I don’t have a walking companion, my plan is to set off alongside the ’walking buddies’ for some company on my travels. We’ve introduced these for the 2019 event to encourage people who don’t want to walk on their own to come along and join the fun.’

The event raises funds for three local charities; Southern Community Initiatives, Men in Sheds and SPort Erin.

Based at The Hub - Thie Rosien in Castletown Road, Port Erin - SCI is home to several initiatives including community art and creative writing projects, crafts, friendly bridge and board games, meditation, and the successful Men in Sheds project.

It aims to tackle isolation and loneliness by bringing people together through community projects, as well as promoting volunteering, inclusive communities, and providing a place for socialising and encouraging community collaboration and activities.

Last year’s Harbour2Harbour Walk saw a record 616 people participating in the fun walk, raising more than £6,000 for the beneficiary charities, and it is hoped even more is raised for the 2019 event.

This year’s event will take place on Sunday, May 19.
