This was the moment a new Manx land speed record was broken.
All eyes were on Julian Webb’s jet dragster Split Second at the PokerStars DragFest at Jurby Airfield over the weekend.
It clocked up 233mph on its second run on Saturday, completing the 1/4mile in just 6.9 seconds.
Event spokesman and competitor Ian Merryweather said: ’Split Second was brought over for the thrill factor and to put on a bit of a show.
’It reached 233 mph on its second run. It was only later when somebody mentioned that might be a new Manx land speed record!
’It ran twice on Saturday when conditions were good but Sunday was rather windy and they had to shut it off on its first run.’
On that occasion, the wind, gusting up to 30mph, caught the parachute as it was deployed and pulled the front end wheels off the ground.
The event providing a spectacular end to the Festival of Motorcycling fortnight.
Some 1,200 to 1,500 dragracing fans turned up to the see the action over the weekend. Ian said: ’The crowds certainly enjoyed it. They were absolutely buzzing.’
The event, organised by Straightliners and Manx Drag Racing Association, has been attracting dragracers on two and four wheels from all over the UK and Ireland since 2010.
Split Second is due to return to Jurby next year.
Straightliners’ Trevor Duckworth said: ’It just blew the whole thing away - literally! It will be back next year when it will smash that record again.’
