Sea kayakers put their expertise to good use last week to help clear rubbish that has piled up on an inaccessible beach
The local explorers, led by George Shaw, from Sea Kayaking IOM, had identified an unsightly pile of rubbish on an isolated beach at the base of the cliffs around Marine Drive, including a pile of tyres that had apparently been dumped from the road.
They teamed up with Beach Buddies organiser Bill Dale, and organised a flotilla of kayaks, towing open canoes, to clear up the eyesore.
The team filled three large open canoes to the brim with more than 20 car and tractor tyres, plus 950 plastic bottles in various states of decay.
They found many more discarded items, including a flat screen TV. However, large amounts of steel, most likely left over from shipwrecks, had to be left behind for a future visit.
’Sea Kayaking Isle of Man will continue carrying on the fight against rubbish in our seas and shores around the beautiful Isle of Man. We all need to join in,’ said George.
Bill Dale accompanied the team in a kayak, and said he was surprised by the amount of rubbish. ’From Marine Drive, and even from the sea, it was impossible to see the real scale of the problem,’ said Bill.
’But everyone did a fantastic job, and we will definitely be going back to this beach, and other remote beaches all around the Island in the future.’
Bill said the tyres had clearly been dumped, and investigations are being carried out to find those responsible.
