House owners in Peel are facing flooding troubles following the recent heavy rainfalls.
Alison Neill told the Examiner she is regularly emptying buckets of water from her basement on Beach Street in the town.
The issue, she said, is due to the recent resurfacing of the road that is now level with the pavement.
’This house has been in our family for 80 years. It was my nana’s house, then my mum’s and now it’s my house. So I know the house inside out and we’ve never had this,’ she said.
’They resurfaced the road before TT this week. It’s only since we’ve had the rain starting that we found this out.’
She described the water being directed onto one side of the road and leaking through the pavement which happens to be the ceiling of her cellar.
’There’s no pavement anymore. The water comes off the porch like a waterfall,’ she added.
’It’s unbelievable.’
’I get up in the morning to empty buckets of water, I get home around 2pm and empty buckets of water and when I go to bed I empty buckets of water.’
Her neighbours also have a basement directly below the pavement, but they have had no issues with water getting through.
Ms Neill said: ’I’m using sandbags to try and divert water away from my house, but nothing’s working.
’They [the Department of Infrastructure] need to build the pavement up and re-cement it.’
A spokesman for the department confirmed that the road was resurfaced in June 2018.
They said: ’Meetings have been held with residents on a number of occasions to work towards addressing the issues raised.
’Survey work is currently being undertaken. Once that information has been reviewed, a suitable solution will be put in place.
’Raising the footpath is an option under consideration, and drainage improvements toward Factory Lane have been identified which will reduce the flow of water down Beach Street.’
Another resident on the same side of the street as Ms Neill, who wishes to be unnamed, has contacted the department about the issue.
’All we want is a kerb,’ they said.
’The road is meant to be lower. It’s been affecting us for years but since they’ve been doing the roads it’s been worse.
’Alison is getting the worst of it. She’s got buckets in the basement.’
