Children from Marown School were presented with bike lights after passing their cycling proficiency tests.
Marown Commissioners gave the students the lights ahead of the clocks changing, as the dark evenings pose a greater risk on the roads.
The local commissioners, Tim O’Hanlon, Ray Sloane and Alison Lynch, personally met the 31 children from year 6 (ages 10 and 11) to spread awareness of the dangers.
Alison Lynch, one of the board members, said: ’This is the first time that we’ve given out bike lights, but we’re hoping it’s going to become an annual thing.
’We’ve done this because it’s good to give something back to the community and to support the local school and it’s children cycling.
’The kids were very keen to switch the lights on once we gave them out. I think they really appreciated them and was a nice surprise to receive after passing their tests.
’We’re also keen to bring an awareness of local committees, as the kids may not know who we are and what we do.’
