Around ten foot tall, and framed by a bright, colourful and luminous hairstyle, a new mural has taken shape on Douglas Head.

The painting is the work of artist James Duggan, known for painting eye-catching, larger-than-life portraits of people, onto unusual canvases.

It features a picture of local personality Larna Kirkham, who said that she was ’totally honoured’ to have been painted by James, and that she is already being recognised around the town.

’I love his work,’ she said. ’The positivity and kind comments that have surrounded the artwork on social media and about town have been so great.

’So many cities around the world have street art and murals, they really brighten up places.’

James has also been crafting murals on the sides of buildings in Douglas, in Market Hill and Guttery Gable, and behind the George Hotel in Castletown.

’Painting on the street, or in public spaces, is a daunting challenge that I really enjoy,’ said James. ’I love that people can view the work day or night, and don’t have to trek to a gallery only to find out the place is closed. ’

’The painting is of a Manx legend, a true ’Douglas head’ and for the foreseeable future there’ll always be a rainbow over Douglas.’

The mural, which is painted on boards at a building site on Douglas head, was funded by the Isle of Man Arts Council.
