An island charity that helps people with learning difficulties has received a boost after staff at a law firm got active.
Employees at DQ Advocates set themselves three days of sporty challenges at their Douglas headquarters to mark Sport Relief, all in aid of Project 21.
Table football, crazy golf and basketball were among the series of office-themed contests before participants completed the week with an epic 100-mile cycle ride courtesy of professional island cyclist Tom Mazzone.
The Manxman, who is supported by DQ, brought a pro-exercise bike into the office as staff, collectively, cycled 100 miles and even managed to complete the distance with time to spare.
A total of £300 was raised which will be used to provide more sporting activities at the charity’s headquarters, Centre 21 in Douglas.
Tom, who joined staff at DQ in presenting the proceeds to the charity, said: ’It’s at times like this which make you realise how invaluable charities like Project 21 are.
’The work its team does in providing year-round sports training, as well as music and drama, really is empowering. Hopefully it won’t be too long before the centre is open again and I’d urge all those who are frustrated right now to keep looking out for each other and enjoy the freedom of getting out when you responsibly can.’
Established in 2000, Project 21 brought together five Manx charities - Manx Mencap, Down’s Syndrome Isle of Man, Autism in Mann, Manx Gateway and the Isle of Man Special Olympics - with a shared vision as representatives from each worked together to create a headquarters and social centre.
Personal assistant at DQ Sarah Tyrer, who helped organise the games, said: ’All the team is delighted to have raised valuable funds for Project 21.
’It plays a vital role in our local community, supporting those people with learning disabilities in the Isle of Man. Everyone involved really got into the team spirit and at times it was even quite competitive!
’A big thank you to Tom too for supporting us all the way and to Cycle 360 who loaned him the bike.’
