A walker has described her ’disgust’ at the state of a Douglas car park as litter is dropped from cars just yards away from multiple bins.
The woman, who didn’t wish to be identified, said she found the car park ’covered’ in rubbish last week when she was walking through the area.
She added that the Quarterbridge car park in Peel Road is often littered with fast food wrappers, sweet and crisp packets and plastic bottles.
As our pictures show, taken on the day, show the woman contacted the Examiner, she found McDonalds and Dominos boxes, foam food containers, bags and bottles.
The woman said she just wanted to know who is responsible for tidying the car park.
We contacted both McDonalds and Douglas Council over the car park, with the latter stating it is not responsible for the car park as it belongs to the Department of Infrastructure.
However it is understood that the council carries out the work of emptying the bins for the department on a daily basis.
McDonalds for its part, doesn’t have any contractual requirement to clean the car park, however a member of staff does remove rubbish from the car park and along Peel Road most days of the week.
It is not the first time that rubbish in the area has caused annoyance for residents.
The ongoing application for KFC and Starbucks has given people who live in the surrounding area the chance to detail the amount of rubbish tossed away by a few uncaring individuals.
That application (18/00977/B) has attracted a large number of comments from residents, doctors and Douglas Council.
One such comment came from Mr Varley of Ravenscourt, on Peel Road.
He acknowledged McDonalds’ work to tidy up the area surrounding its store but said he feared that with a new outlet, the problem will get worse.
Mr Varley added: ’The new outlets’ intended scope of litter sweeping may be insufficient to minimise the increase in any such nuisance and McDonald’s may reasonably decline to include litter from other sources.’
Mrs Stewart of St Catherine’s Close agreed in her comments to planning and said that despite the company’s efforts, ’you can find McDonalds litter for miles’.
And she stated her belief that adding more fast food stores to Peel Road would only make the problem worse.
