A five-year-old donated £855 worth of treats to patients and staff at Noble’s Hospital’s children’s ward as a ’thank you’ for the care he’s received there.

Lucas Garrett presented two iPads and a load of toys and sweets to the ward after raising funds through a five-hour BMX relay he organised with his parents Amber and Wayne at Ramsey BMX track.

The Bunscoill Rhumsaa student, who has severe asthma, chose to do this after a common cold had resulted in him being admitted to the ward as he was unable to breathe unaided.

Amber said: ’This isn’t the first time Lucas’s asthma has resulted in a stay in hospital and as always the staff were amazing.

’Once on the mend we asked Lucas what he would like to give back to the hospital for saving his life. He chose an iPad because the whole time he was bed bound and it was his choice of entertainment.’

She described her son as ’an outdoorsy child’, saying that being stuck indoors made him feel frustrated.

However, the staff’s ’positive and caring attitudes’ and playing on the hospital’s iPad made him feel much better.

Lucas, who has been a BMX biker for two years, had 15 people take part in his fundraising relay.

’It might not seem too hard with several people but considering the average lap time is 1.30 minutes that’s an average of 200 laps,’ Amber added.

’With a steady flow of volunteers from IOM BMX Club and fellow BMX riders throughout the day we hit the five hours!

’We had a blast and managed to raise £855 for the children’s ward. This enabled us to purchase two iPads, a ridiculous supply of chocolate, biscuits and sweets for the staff and £200 worth of toys for the play room.’

Lucas said: ’I did it because I stay in the hospital a lot and they help me all the time.

’They [nurses and doctors] are lovely all the time.’

He added that the staff were ’super happy’ to receive his gifts and that made him feel happy too.

Both his parents expressed how impressed they are with their son’s thoughtfulness.

Wayne said: ’Last time he was in the children’s ward he was confined to one room.

’Because of the chances that he might get an infection he wasn’t allowed out and so was given an iPad.

’When Lucas got out he said he wanted to do something for them.

’I was quite shocked at what he said.

’I’m very proud of him.’

His mother said: ’I’m super proud of him.

’It’s quite a big thing from a five-year-old.’
