There is a chance to learn how to play the ancient and beautiful game of Mahjong at the hub in Port Erin.

An introduction evening is taking place from 7pm to 9pm at Thie Rosien on Monday, March 19.Sessions are already held on Mondays (from 10am to midday) and are supported by a loyal group of players, but it could have wider appeal said hub co-ordinator Janet Bridle.

’It’s such a good game. A lot of people play it on their phone or tablet but it’s much better when played with others. ’Although it can appear to be a complicated game, the nuances can quickly be mastered and it’s not long before you can tell the difference between a red or white dragon, a bamboo or character and you’re lining up your chows and pongs.’I was taught aged 16 by a friend’s mother who was bought up in Hong Kong and I loved it but haven’t played since. Then someone came into the Hub asking if we fancied holding regular sessions and that sounded like a great idea.’It’s a little but like rummy but you play with beautifully crafted tiles and dice.Regular player Roger Kent said: ’It’s a really enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours on a Monday morning. We would like to encourage more people to come along and enjoy the game as much as we do.’For more information contact Janet on 838180 or email [email protected]
