Swiss Manx Grand Prix newcomer Mauro Poncini has been named as the rider who died during the red-flag incident at Cruickshanks during Tuesday evening’s qualifying session.
Tributes have been paid to the 29-year-old painter from Caslano by both Swiss authorities and Italian media after he suffered fatal injuries in the incident that also involved another competitor.
Organisers confirmed on Tuesday evening that the second rider was reported as having sustained minor injuries and was being assessed at Noble’s Hospital.
The update released after incident, which happened roughly 20 minutes into the session, added: ‘In accordance with the event’s standard operating procedures, a multi-agency investigative process is now underway.
‘The Manx Grand Prix Races would like to thank the marshals, medical teams, emergency services, Manx Care and all personnel that supported with the response to today’s incident.
‘Our thoughts are with the competitors, family and friends of those involved, who have asked for privacy at this time.’
The session was not restarted, making it the third session this week to be disrupted or cancelled because of weather or red flags.
Poncini was an experienced short-circuit racer who had also competed in the International Road Racing Championship.
Having started his racing career with mini bikes in 2007, he transitioned to Supersport bikes in 2013, before moving road racing and hill events.
The Swiss Moto Federation added: ‘Mauro was a person with an exceptional heart, deeply caring towards his loved ones and everyone around him.
‘Thanks to his warm and open personality, he was well-liked by fellow riders and respected by all for his great humanity.
‘In Mauro, the Swiss motorcycling community has lost a passionate and deeply committed rider.’
