After travelling 12,812 miles in a fluffy rainbow car, Team Mad Manx have reached the finish line of their epic road journey.

Members Adam and Fern Callister and Katharine Watling - all from Ramsey - plus Australian friend Dan Simpson completed The Mongol Rally passing through 22 countries from Isle of Man to Ulan Ude, Russia, in 61 days.

The team has raised more than £1,500 for Hospice Isle of Man and more than £900 for Cool Earth, a charity that works to halt deforestation.

They successfully beat their target of reaching the finish line in 75 days. This was despite being stopped by the police 13 times, two visits to the mechanics, towing fellow rally drivers and suffering bouts of altitude sickness and upset stomachs.

The team took to Facebook, writing: ’It’s fair to say that we are all absolutely shattered and looking forward to a proper bed and a decent shower.’

Having completed the challenge early, they have decided to get some rest before heading in to work instead of driving the rainbow ’tiger’ - a converted Toyota Starlet - all the way back to the island.

The vehicle will be shipped to Estonia where they pick up their adventure in November.

’You never know, you might even see a furry rainbow-coloured car winding its way around the Isle of Man in time for Christmas,’ the group wrote.

They thanked supporters, saying: ’We couldn’t have done it without your help.’

We last reported in August that Team Mad Manx were pulled over by police in Germany.

It was their colourful vehicle that caught the interest of border police in Upper Bavaria while on the autobahn in the country.

Gerrid Gottwald, deputy head of the Pidinger police service, said: ’Colleagues saw the car and thought: "Let’s take a look, because it is optisch herausragend (visually outstanding)".’

Police said the 20-year-old Toyota hatchback would have failed miserably if the team had tried to register it in Germany, but it was safe for travel and was allowed to continue on its journey.
