Dressed as the world’s most famous stuntman, supports of a cancer charity are raising money for the a new CT scanner at Noble’s Hospital.
Up to 25 Knievels are taking part in what is the ninth year of ’Being Evel 4 A Good Cause’ which has raised over £93,000 for charity since 2012.
All the entrants for the fundraiser dress as Evel Knievel, the world’s most iconic stuntman.
They were due to take part in an annual fundraiser which the island was set to host this year.
Derek Peters from Mannin Cancers said: ’In the Welsh hills every year there is a rumble of motorbike engines as hundreds of motorcyclists all dressed as Evel Knievel drive around Wales as a group, paying homage to the great man himself and raising money for charity.
’This year the Isle of Man was to play host and Mannin Cancers was chosen to be the charity.
’Over the weekend of April 24, the island would have welcomed over a 100 bikers dressed as Evel Knievel, with our Manx Knievels joining in a weekend of fun and events, culminating in Mannin Cancers Evel Sunday.
’It was to be a family day where the general public could be part of the event, and support us in an attempt at the world record for most people dressed as Evel in one place.’
Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, this couldn’t happen. So another idea was formed and the Welsh and Manx participants decided to hold ’Evel Lockdown Friday on April 24.
All the money is going towards the goal of raising £1.4m to assist the replace the island’s CT scanners with the very latest state-of-the-art Spectral CT Scanners.
Mr Peters’ own effort saw him recreate one of Evel Knievel’s most famous stunts from his garden in Douglas, the jumping of Snake River Canyon in Idaho, USA.
Complete with a cardboard canyon, paddling pool and bike, Mr Peters managed what Knievel never could and landed the jump.
As the Manx Independent went to print, the Manx Knievels had raised just under £6,500 from their efforts this month.
