Manx Mencap has received a £30,000 grant from Manx Lottery Trust to support its programme of activities for adults with learning disabilities across the Isle of Man.
The funding, awarded through the trust’s Community Awards programme, will help the charity continue providing activities designed to improve physical fitness, encourage creativity and reduce social isolation.
The funding programme provides grants of between £2,501 and £50,000 for projects intended to benefit local communities and people in need.
It supports a range of initiatives, including those focused on developing skills, improving health, protecting the environment and bringing people together.
Manx Mencap provides activities for approximately 480 adults each week, with demand for its services continuing to grow.
Many of the sessions take place at Centre 21 in Douglas, where the charity runs activities three days a week throughout the year.
These include social clubs, karaoke, arts and crafts, and sessions led by local entertainer Uncle Fester.
Weekly dance sessions are also offered with separate funding from the Isle of Man Arts Council.
Debs Dixon from Manx Mencap said: ‘We are incredibly grateful to Manx Lottery Trust for this generous grant. Our activities give adults with learning disabilities opportunities to socialise, be creative, stay active and enjoy new experiences in a welcoming and supportive environment.
‘The programme has become a real highlight for our members, and demand continues to grow. This funding will help us continue providing varied and engaging activities that make a genuine difference to people’s wellbeing and sense of connection.’
The charity’s wider programme includes monthly movie nights, themed events and visits from special guests, including miniature horses, reptiles and birds of prey.
Members also have opportunities to take part in theatre trips, an annual visit to the circus, adventure activities and a Christmas celebration.
