Isle of Man Transport will step back in time this weekend, with a two days full of wartime nostalgia.

The annual Island At War weekend will see steam trains, electric trams, vintage buses and horses all on full display, along with performances from a leading wartime vocal group and a range of historic military vehicles and characters in wartime dress.

Most of the action will be happening between the railway stations of Douglas and Port Erin, with music from the top vocal group, the D-Day Darlings.

Singing all the popular, evocative war time songs, such as We’ll Meet Again, I’ll Be Seeing You, Land of Hope and Glory, and Bless Em’ All, the singers will be performing at two special concerts at the Tickethall restaurant, Douglas Railway station on Friday and Saturday night, on Sunday afternoon, and on Saturday afternoon at Port Erin railway station.

The singers gained new found fame by reaching the finals of this year’s round of the talent show Britain’s Got Talent.

They will be joined by the local vocal group, the Southern Belles, who will be in Douglas on Saturday and Port Erin on Sunday.

A display of vintage military uniforms will be on display at the Tickethall, courtesy of the Manx Amateur Dramatic Federation and curator Michael Starkey, and there will be period and restored military vehicles at Douglas, Port Erin and Castletown railway stations throughout the weekend.

There is also the chance to be made up in vintage 1940s fashion with the new Glampervan, also found at Douglas Station.

All events are free, apart from the evening concerts, which can be booked by contacting Isle of Man Transport on 697457.

Also during the weekend, Ramsey will be holding a range of wartime events, including a ’Nostalgic Wartime Concert and Dance’ from the Cloideryn players on Friday and Saturday evening, at St Paul’s hall.

Tickets are £12.50, available from Ramsey library

Also on Saturday afternoon the Ramsey Town band will be performing outside the Old Courthouse, and there will be an exhibition of memorabilia and press stories depicting Ramsey’s experiences during the war years.
