There are a plethora of new releases coming thick and fast at the moment from local bands and singers based over here and over there.
This week we’ll take a look at a couple of brand new songs, starting with the new release from indie rock band A Stones Throw.
The three piece, featuring singer and guitarist Mikey Howland, bassist Nathan Thomson and drummer Bryce Collins , released ’Young Ones’ last week.
Sung around the refrain of ’the world doesn’t stop for no one’, ’Young Ones’ is a thoughtful, restrained and driving song about the disrespect shown to the environment around us by those who may not know any better.
Singer Mikey explained: ’We feel something bigger than us had called us to drop this song. ’From start to finish something felt good about it all.
’The song entered my mind one evening and it felt right as soon as it went through the mic and out the speakers.
’It has some subtle anger inside and annoyance, which I think may have something to do with seeing a recently passed car, which had an ’R’ plate, throw a big McDonald’s bag out the window right outside my home.
’It really grinds my gears seeing young folk litter like that. ’It’s disrespectful to say the least. The song seems to be a reminder of what’s wrong with the world today.
’It’s also a reminder to leave a legacy for the younger generation,’ he added.
’I feel there has been a huge disconnect from the earth and nature in recent times and to me that’s mainly what’s wrong with the world today.’
’Young Ones’ is available on all streaming services, including Apple Music and Spotify.
Also releasing new material is solo singer Alice Dudley.
Currently at university in Falmouth, Alice’s latest single, ’On Repeat’, is a deceptively simple piece of atmospheric acoustic loveliness, with the soft guitar lines providing a nice, delicate frame for Alice’s almost-whispered vocals to drape them selves over.
The song is a reflection on her lockdown experience and is a pretty timely release, given the situation she finds herself in again across the water.
’I’d had lots of the lyrics for "On Repeat" sitting around for ages, but I finally finished the track when I came home for the first lockdown and found myself stuck in my childhood bedroom for weeks on end,’ said Alice.
’I guess I’ve timed my release perfectly, maybe it will become the soundtrack to the next lockdown.’
She has also produced a video to go along with the song, available to view on YouTube, which is well worth checking out.
Elsewhere this weekend, the pick of the gigs this weekend sees Man In The Woods will be playing at the Rovers in Douglas on Saturday night, with support from Half Naked Headline and there is strong line up at the Secret Pizza Company, in Castletown, with teenage indie rockers Glitch 265 on Friday night and Voodoo bandits on Saturday.
