With Christmas comes the ubiquitous raft of happy, jingly and cheesily-breezy festive songs that we all know inside and out.
In the past, there hasn’t been many Manx bands who have attempted to write their own Christmas classic.
However, one local band who are wrapping themselves up in tinsel and dancing to the sound of jingling sleigh bells are the effervescent Biskee Brisht.
The melodic folk-pop group are set to release ’(Christmas) Maybe Next Year’, their tribute to enjoying the festive season after a year gone wrong, tomorrow (Friday).
Recorded at the Ballagroove Studios under the guidance of producer Gyp Buggane, Ruby Biscoe-Taylor and co, including guitarist Kin, accordionist John Kaighin, bassist Matt Brewster, drummer Matt Creer, percussionist Felipe Kowalczuk and the brass section of Django and James Kinley, even managed to throw together a hastily-arranged kids choir for the recording, resulting in a song that is described as ’joyous and sad all at once’.
’After a year full of struggle and disappointment, there seem to be two ways of thinking about this Christmas,’ said Ruby.
’The first is the "making up for lost time" camp, who are channelling all their energy into making this the best Christmas ever, to compensate for a terrible year.
’The second is the "given up all hope" camp who realise they won’t get to see their loved ones this year and are quietly trying to get on with it all.
’(Christmas) Maybe Next Year’ is for the latter. The song is dedicated to everybody who’s missing someone this year, everyone that is dreading this Christmas, and everyone hoping for a better one next year.
Ruby echoed the sentiments of the vast majority of us, saying that Biskee Brisht count themselves very lucky to be living in the Isle of Man.
’There are not many places on the planet right now where a large group can come together - in person - to record, so it’s an amazing achievement for the island that were in this position.
’In fact, so many people were involved in the track, we broke Ballagroove Studio’s record for the most people in the studio at once and the most individual tracks in one recording.
’The song is packed full with layers of violins, brass, cello, guitars, percussion, bells and even a children’s choir.’
’(Christmas) Maybe Next Year’ was recorded with help from the Isle of Man Arts Council and will be available from Friday on Spotify, Bandcamp, Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Find out more from Biskee Brisht’s Facebook page .
Elsewhere on Saturday night, the pubs are rammed with some of the island’s finest good-time rock and roll bands, including The Crystal Methodists at the Rovers, and Southern State, at Quids Inn, in Douglas, the Boneyard shaking things up at Bar Logo, in Ramsey, and the original Manx rockers, the Hunters, featuring the legendary Tony ’Flash’ Howells at the Sidings, in Castletown, from 9pm.
