The Manx Electric Railway has cleaned up at the annual British Tram Awards.

The railway was nominated for four categories and won every one it qualified for - including event of the year.

The awards, which are held in January every year, celebrate trams from across the British Isles.

Awards are presented for traditional tram of the year, event of the year, tramway of the year and modern tram of the year, which the MER can’t enter.

Event of the year was won by the anniversary celebrations held last year to celebrate 125 years since the MER lines opened in 1893 with a repeat of the first trip to Groudle.

There were eight days of special events.

Car number 14 won traditional tram of the year following extensive repair work which saw it return to service.

And the railway as a whole picked up the award for tramway of the year.

A statement on the awards website said: ’In truth it was probably always going to be the case of how big the winning margin would be and that is exactly how it turned out in the British Trams Online Tram of the Year 2018 contest.

’The Manx Electric Railway has won - and won convincingly.

’The only category the MER didn’t win they didn’t qualify for.’

Toasting the successes, Isle of Man Transport said: ’Fantastic wins for Manx Electric Railway.

’Well done to all the team for making the railway such a great success.’
