A RED weather warning has been issued for coastal overtopping on the Isle of Man, with dangerous conditions expected around high tide tonight (Monday).

The warning, issued by the Isle of Man Met Office, will be in force from 10pm tonight until 1am on Tuesday.

Gale or severe gale-force south-south-westerly winds, combined with high spring tides, are expected to cause significant waves and debris to overtop coastal roads and promenades.

The worst conditions are forecast around high tide at approximately 11.30pm.

The areas affected are Douglas Promenade, Ramsey Promenade, Laxey Promenade, Shore Road in Rushen and Castletown Promenade.

A red warning means extreme conditions are likely, with a risk to life, possible widespread damage and significant travel disruption.

People are being urged to take the warning seriously and avoid the affected coastal areas during the warning period.

Department of Infrastructure teams responded to 85 fallen trees, 31 flooding incidents and more than 25 other storm-related call-outs.

The department said its out-of-hours and standby teams had worked throughout the storm, with clean-up operations due to begin on Monday morning.

The severe weather also caused widespread transport disruption, with multiple Isle of Man Steam Packet Company sailings cancelled and flights at Ronaldsway affected.

Rail services were disrupted, with the Manx Electric Railway closed on Sunday because of trees down on the line. Other services, including the Steam Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway and Douglas Bay Horse Tramway, were also affected.

Beach huts at Port Erin were damaged, with some swept from their positions by rough seas.

A separate yellow warning for gale or severe gale-force winds is due to run from 6pm tonight until 6am on Tuesday, with gusts of 50mph to 60mph expected widely and up to 65mph in exposed areas.
