People who attended the Illiam Dhone commemoration raised money for charity during the event.

The ceremony, held on January 2 every year at Hango Hill in Castletown, remembers a man who is revered as a hero of the Manx by many.

Staff from the Compton Vaults bar in Castletown invited those who attended to warm up and have hot soup, provided by the host Juan Christian.

A charity collection for the Foodbank was arranged for those eating soup at the venue. It raised £140.90.

Foodbank director Jane Foxon thanked all those who contributed.

Both Mec Vannin and the Celtic League, which organise the commemoration, thanked all those who attended and gave a contribution.

In this week’s Examiner, Alistair Ramsay questions whether Illiam Dhone was really a Manx nationalist in his politics column.
