Olivia and Oliver have taken top spot in the most popular baby names in the island.

The Civil Registry’s 2017 statistics on births, deaths and marriages has compiled its 2017 figures.

Oliver has taken over s Archie and Theo, which were the island’s top choice in names last year. The popular choices for girls’ names this year were Olivia, with Evie, Ella, Scarlet, Isla and Amelia not far behind.

Some of the lesser-known names registered in 2017 included Ottilie, which means ’little wealthy one’, as well as Jaxon, meaning ’God has been gracious’.

Other key findings from the statistics collected showed that more boys were born in 2017 than girls, with October being the most popular month for registrations.

This is in line with global figures.

There was also a small decline in the number of births and deaths registered overall last year.

It was also discovered that the highest number of civil marriages was recorded in the Isle of Man since 2011 and that over 60% of civil ceremonies took place at a Registry Office, with August being the most popular month for nuptials.

Martyn Perkins MHK, political member with responsibility for the registries, said: ’It’s fantastic to see the Isle of Man’s statistics shared publicly and to see the breadth and depth of work carried out by the Civil Registry.

’There are many stunning locations all over the Isle of Man for civil ceremonies, and it’s testament to the island’s natural beauty to see that couples from the UK and farther afield are choosing the Isle of Man for their big day.

’The department’s tourism team promote the Isle of Man as a destination for weddings, with the island’s many unique venues and impressive natural scenery creating the perfect setting for residents and visitors alike.

’The standout venue was the start line for the Ramsey Sprint on the day of the racing for a couple from the UK, which just goes to shows how the Civil Registry can make that dream come true’.
