It is not unusual to have two artists share an exhibition space, especially if their work shares a lot of similarities.
What makes the latest joint exhibition at the Sayle Gallery stand out, is that the two artists are mother and daughter.
Opening their combined display, entitled ’Cut From The Same Cloth’, Alice Fayle, 26, and mother Julie, 58, both display a great deal of shared talent and skill in creating unique pieces of art from textiles.
The artists are former students of the University College Isle of Man, both studying the Foundation course, when it was known as the Isle of Man College.
They both then studied at different fashion colleges in London, with Alice going on to forge a career in textile design with top European design house Bally.
Alice returned to the Isle of Man in 2014, and opened Alice Rose Fayle Design, a textiles and Illustration company.
It is clear that, while they both share many similarities in their work, they also differ quite markedly with their individual approach to their art.
’Mum has a different edge to her work,’ said Alice. ’Mine is quite graphic and functional, whereas Mum is more fine art based’
’Alice’s work is design-specific, to be more useful or to be worn,’ said Julie, continuing the theme. ’Mine is more fine art driven, so it’s about the ideas and the associations with textiles with old clothes and worn items, and how we keep memories alive with those things.
’Mine is made to look at and make you think rather than to wear or to be of any use.’
Alice’s designs are indeed intended to be practical and functional, yet retain a definite artistic craftsmanship about them.
She often takes her inspiration from natural forms and textures, and digitally renders illustrations and photographs to screen or digitally print directly onto fabric to make eye-catching and intricate items of clothing.
Opening ’Cut From The Same Cloth’ is something of a leap into the dark for both women. While they have been involved in exhibitions before, they have never held their own displays.
’I’ve never done a big show like this before,’ said Alice. ’I’ve only ever had one or two pieces in joint exhibitions before. I did a graduate fashion show, but that is very different. An exhibition like this is a bit new.’
’I’ve taken part in exhibitions in London before we’ve never done one with just the two of us.
It’s nice and it’s easier when you do it together with someone that you know,’ said Julia. ’You know your work will hang well together.
’Plus, I need Alice’s technical support.’
’I need mums knowledge,’ said Alice. ’And it is good to be able to help each other.’
’Cut From The Same Cloth’ opens at the Sayle Gallery today (Saturday).
