A 63-year-old woman from Santon has admitted driving while nearly three times the drink-drive legal limit.

Joan Erica Hughes-Jones was stopped from leaving a car park by another driver who suspected her of drink-driving.

Hughes-Jones pleaded guilty to the offence and will be sentenced on December 14 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that Hughes-Jones, who lives at Harbour Road, was at the Spar shop in Anagh Coar on October 26 at 3.10pm.

Staff at the store refused to sell her alcohol due to concerns about her being drunk.

She was described as nearly falling over and smelling of alcohol.

Staff then saw her leave the shop holding her car keys and get into a Mini in the car park.

She proceeded to drive from the bottom of the car park to the top where another vehicle drove in front of her to stop her leaving.

Police arrived and when Hughes-Jones got out of the Mini she was said to have stumbled slightly.

She was taken to police headquarters where she failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 104. The legal limit is 35.

The court heard that she has no previous convictions.

Defence advocate David Reynolds asked for a probation report to be completed before sentencing.

Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith said that, in light of the level of reading, a full probation report considering all sentencing options would be necessary.

Bail was granted in the sum of £500 with conditions to live at her home address, not to drive, co-operate with probation services, and not leave the island without court consent.
