Port St Mary commissioner Alec Merchant is heartbroken after his dog Suki fell victim to what’s believed to be highly toxic poison, eaten near Kallow Point.
He was taking his much-loved five-year-old Border collie for her usual walk on Sunday when the incident happened.
Port St Mary Commissioners has warned dog owners in the village to be ’extra wary’ when walking their animals.
’We went to Kallow Point and the cove at Perwick bay,’ he told the Manx Independent.
’Suki had the unfortunate habit of eating cat poo. I saw her nibbling something in the grass where she had previously chased rabbits.
’I imagined she was eating rabbit poo and called her away.’
By the time the pair reached the Underway Suki had started vomiting.
She went off her food and was only interested in water.
Mr Merchant took Suki to the vet in Castletown on Monday, where they were drawing up a treatment plan for Suki and discussed carrying out blood tests.
But he said Suki then had a ’very disturbed night’ and early the next morning he took her to the emergency vet in Douglas.
’They called at 11am asking for permission to put her down,’ he said. ’Her organs were destroyed and she was braindead.’
He added: ’Whatever she had was highly toxic. It’s a risk for dogs. I think it was poison for rabbits in their droppings. I’m utterly devastated.
’She was timid when I got her three years ago and she grew to be so friendly, she was good with other dogs and children.’ He said the house felt so empty without her, adding: ’It’s just desperate.’
He urged other dog owners in the south to be careful while walking their animals.
’We were in the area of Kallow Point, Perwick and the golf course,’ he said.
’If any landowner is putting down a highly toxic substance that’s a matter of great concern for animals and children.’
Police confirmed to the Manx Independent that at present, no investigation has been launched into the incident.
