Noel and Gertie, a touring production which tells the story of the relationship between Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward, is coming to the Gaiety Theatre later this week.
The show, which has been on tour since February, chronicles the legendary lifelong friendship of the two stars.
Featuring songs, sketches and scenes from some of Coward’s best works, it pays tribute to two of the best-loved performers of this century while taking a well-orchestrated trip down memory lane.
Scenes from Private Lives, Still Life and Blithe Spirit and snippets of timeless songs such as Dance Little Lady and I’ll See You Again, make it a show which entrances.
Devised by Sheridan Morley it’s a musical love story performed by a cast of just two, accompanied by a pianist.
Noel and Gertie stars Ben Stock as Noel Coward and Manx-born Helen Power as Gertrude Lawrence.
Helen attended Ballakermeen High School in Douglas and the Christine Wild Theatre School and was a member of the Manx Youth Band and Manx Concert Brass.
She made her professional debut at the Gaiety Theatre 15 years ago this year in a summer season of Fame, playing the role of Carmen Diaz and singing the title number.
She has since performed in musicals in the West End, Toronto and on several major UK tours. In addition to this, she has performed as a freelance singer all over the world and recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Her debut album, Enraptured was released online yesterday (Monday).
Helen, 36, now lives in London with her husband, David Quinlan. She told the Manx Independent: 'Acting is a hugely competitive business and the odds are so stacked against you at every turn that finding the drive to keep plugging away year after year is an achievement in itself.
'Tangibly, my greatest achievement is definitely my album though, as I directed the whole project from concept to completion and took on so many different roles but I couldn’t be more proud of the result. Capturing the feel of live performance which is what makes music magic for me.’
Noel and Gertie is at the Gaiety Theatre on April 27 and 28. Tickets available at www.villagaiety.com.
