A wandering son will return to the island early next month, to play a special one off concert just a few yards from where he once lived.
The acoustic duo Wilson and Wakeman will perform at the Peel Centenary Centre on Saturday, March 4, featuring the talents of multi- instrumentalist and composer Adam Wakeman and singer/songwriter Damien Wilson.
The duo are currently on a small UK tour in support of their latest album, ’Weirkeeper’s Tales’, which will take in dates in many intimate venues.
This particular date will be made special for Adam Wakeman, who is the son of famous ex-island resident and rock star Rick Wakeman.
Life has taken on a very different pace since he lived in Peel, and nowadays Adam is a session musician and composer in great demand. The list of artists he has played with over the years reads as a who’s who of prime entertainment, and his work features with acts as diverse as Robbie Williams, Will Young, Tony Hadley and Atomic Kitten. In stark contrast he has just finished touring with rock titans Black Sabbath, where he played rhythm guitar and keyboards for the legendary godfathers of metal, routinely playing to crowds of thousands across the world.
He is also a mainstay and co-songwriter in the Ozzy Osbourne backing band.
Somehow, Adam also manages to make time for his own projects, namely ’Snakecharmer’ and the prog rock group ’Headspace’, alongside Wilson.
Wilson is also a major talent, and was once described by fellow rock legend Ronnie James Dio as having ’one of the most versatile voices in rock, with an incredible range.’
Don’t expect anything as bombastic from Wilson and Wakeman, however. Their album is full of delicate, beautifully crafted acoustic and piano ballads, and promises for a night in very close company of two exceptionally talented musicians.
The prospect of returning to Peel and playing a small concert to his one-time home crowd is one that does excite Adam.
’I can’t wait to come back,’ he said. ’It doesn’t seem that long ago I was living in Peel, above my dad’s music shop.
’The time goes so quickly, it’s unbelievable sometimes.
’I think the last time I visited the Isle of Man was with my band Headspace, which must have been nearly 10 years ago now.
’I’m looking forward to seeing and spending time with some old friends. It’s going to be great.’
Tickets are £10, available from Shakti Mann, Celtic Gold, Peter Norris Music and Thompson Travel, Port Erin.
