A Sulby resident is counting the cost after flooding damaged his home following heavy rainfall.
Malcolm Henderson has criticised the Department of Infrastructure for not caring enough about the water damage at his property at Kerrowmoar.
’I am absolutely furious at their "couldn’t care a damn" attitude,’ he told the Examiner.
He believes the resurfacing of the road outside his house which was carried out this summer has led to his front porch, hallway and kitchen becoming waterlogged.
The DoI has said it’s due to blockages in gullies nearby.
’I have lived there for eight years and have never had water flooding into the porch, let alone the house,’ Mr Henderson said. ’This has all started since they [the DoI] resurfaced the road.
’They have raised the road and at the same time lowered the kerb so that the water runs straight into the houses there.
’My carpets are ruined and my hall and kitchen are flooded.’
He said he was concerned that his home could be flooded again if there was further heavy rainfall.
’The DoI said it was a blocked drain but I would very much doubt that is the cause.
’You can see the water running straight off the road, over the significantly lowered kerb, straight into my house.’
He phoned the DoI on Tuesday (November 27) about the issue.
A department spokesman said that a site visit was arranged with him the next day with the viewing taking place ’while it was raining’.
’The same officer who attended on Wednesday returned to the property on Thursday as he was in the area. It was raining heavily and the gullies near the property were backing up.’
Staff arranged to jet clean the gullies and remove debris which may be causing blockage on Friday and left sandbags outside Mr Henderson’s home.
However, Mr Henderson didn’t think it would solve the problem. ’How did they think that would help,’ he said.
