A talk on the warship HMS Quilliam and ’Q’ class destroyers is the subject of this spring’s Quilliam lecture.

The lecture series, organised by the Quilliam Group, celebrates former parish resident John Quilliam who steered Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.

Speaker Professor Eric Grove will deliver his fourth lecture in the series at Arbory parish church on Thursday, April 25.

HMS Quilliam - named after Arbory’s Trafalgar hero - was a warship built as part of the emergency programme to protect allied shipping from German U-Boats in the Atlantic during World War Two, but eventually also served in the Mediterranean and Far East theatres of war.

Two years ago, to mark this auspicious connection with the island and Arbory parish, the Quilliam Group commissioned the building of a model of the destroyer, and it will be on display in Arbory church during the lecture.

It is hoped that in time permission will be given for the longer term display of the model on this site.

In addition, an A4 limited edition print of HMS Quilliam in action has been produced by group member Colleen Corlett, and copies of this will be on sale at the lecture.

Admission to the lecture is by ticket only, which are free of charge and available at: Bridge Bookshops in Port Erin and Ramsey, and from Mike Berry (824550), or Phil Smith (832146/495146).

Alternatively, contact Dave Handscombe at: [email protected].

The lecture starts at 7.45pm, but the audience is advised to arrive at 7.15 pm to ensure parking. Before the lecture starts there is music and a warm-up quiz.

Refreshments and a complimentary tot of rum follow the lecture, with a raffle and opportunity to view the model.

There will be a retiring collection to provide funds for further projectsbeing planned by the group.

The group thanked everyone for their help in bringing the event together.
