A man who suffers from multiple sclerosis has completed the TT course on a mobility scooter to raise cash for a charity which fights the disease.

Noel Wilson, an ex-motorsport instructor from Milton Keynes, has raised more than £8,000 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society over the last year by riding his 8mph scooter around circuits such as Silverstone and Brands Hatch.

The 58-year-old completed the 37.73 mile TT course in a time of four hours, 33 minutes at an average speed of 7.235 miles per hour.

Noel also completed the Southern 100 course during his visit to the island in a time of 29 minutes.

He said after completing the TT course: ’What a day it was. I had been working towards it for a year.

’I was always worried that I had correctly calculated the amount of battery power I needed. I had never been to the island before even though my father used to be a co-owner in a racing bike team (Hejera Racing). I had only ever seen the circuit on TV so I spent the first part of the lap saving power where I could. I was amazed to make just about 10 miles to the Ballacraine car park on my oldest set of batteries for the first change. The second set of batteries then took me all the way to Ramsey.

’At that time the temperature at Ramsey was about eight degrees but as I started climbing the temperature started to drop as did the battery power, very quickly. After four miles the batteries were empty. Another set of brand new batteries were fitted, as was a large coat. The temperature up on the mountain was just three degrees and it was blowing hard.

’After a lot of worrying and shivering we finally made it to Creg-Ny-Baa with plenty of power left to get us home and warm.’

Noel thanked his support team, the TT Marshals Association, the Isle of Man Police, the Mannin Hotel, and Shaun Counsell and the Department of Infrastructure, for helping to organise the lap.

He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2013 and said his ultimate goal is to raise £20,000 to donate to the MS Society and the Milton Keynes MS Group. The illness meant that he had to give up his instructor job.
