The island has been targeted by a new Viking invasion.

A flock of rare waxwings has been delighting shoppers visiting the Tesco store in Douglas.

No fewer than nine of these exotic-looking birds have been spotted in trees around the Lake Road supermarket’s car park.

They were first spotted on Friday and have been making a regular appearance ever since.

There are infrequent ’irruptions’ of waxwings to the British Isles when the berry crop in their native Scandinavia fails.

When these invasions take place, the birds are typically spotted near supermarkets because such sites are often planted with ornamental berry trees and bushes.
