A cherished number plate has been sold at auction for nearly £40,000.

MAN-1-N went under the hammer at Chrystals Auctions on Allan Street, Douglas on Sunday with a starting price of just £1,000.

Following a bidding war between two residents, the number plate eventually sold for £39,220.

It isn’t the first time a special number plate has gone under the hammer in the island.

In 2009, MN1, the first ever number issued, was expected to fetch between £15,000 and £25,000.

It eventually sold for £100,000.
