Port St Mary’s old gasworks has been reduced to rubble.

The village’s redundant gasworks next to the steam railway station has been demolished to make way for housing.

Haven Homes was granted planning consent in June 2016 (15/00870/B) to demolish the two gas holders and associated buildings and construct 20 homes on the site. These will all be three- or four-bed houses in terraces, each with small front and back gardens.

A land contamination survey was carried out as part of the application.

Levels of pollutants in the ground from the historical production of coal gas were found not to be hazardous to public health.

But land remediation was required at cost of between £100,000 and £200,000.
