Classic songs, catchy sing-along lines, a large cast of singing and dancing children and some of the most iconic, readily-identifiable villains ever created.

As a musical, Oliver! has the lot, and it will soon be performed in the north of the island by the Ramsey-based Cloideryn community theatre group.

Rehearsals are well underway now, and it has given the first time director, Carol Fraser, a chance to work with the young cast, many of who have never performed onstage before.

Carol has acted with Cloideryn many times in the past, and is usually seen in the role of the ’baddie’, as was seen in her show stealing role as ’Bessie Barnacle’ in last year’s production of Peter Pan.

’When we talked about doing Oliver I was excited,’ she said.

’I have been involved with the play three times over the years and love it.

’I love acting but directing is so rewarding. To bring out talent from someone who doesn’t realise how good they are is a brilliant feeling.

’The last couple months have not disappointed. The kids have been amazing, picking up routines quickly and working hard. They have bloomed as I ask them to do more and more. It’s great to see them growing in confidence and really performing.’

The production will run for five performances, from Thursday, August 31 to Sunday, September 3.

The part of Oliver has been given to identical twins Ethan and Cameron Lace, who will share the role over the demanding schedule.

Carol said that the boys have embraced the part ’with gusto’ and their performance of the song ’Where is Love’ is described as a real tear-jerker.

Cloideryn regulars Chris Lowdon, who is also the vicar of St Paul’s Cathedral, will play Fagin, Andy Done will take the role of Bill Sykes and Heather Ruffino will play Nancy.

Tickets for the shows are £8.50 for adults and £7 for concessions, available from Ramsey Town Hall.

The Oliver! cast will be taking part in the Ramsey Carnival, on the back of a steam powered float on Saturday, July 22.
