A theatre group from the south of the island took home the main prize in the recent One Act Play festival.

The Rushen Players were awarded the Northern Arts Rose Bowl for ’best play’ for their adaptation of the classic Alan Bennett play, ’A Cream Cracker Under the Settee’, at the end of the three-day festival of local amateur dramatics that saw six different short plays performed at the King’s Court Theatre, King William’s College.

Pam Clewis, who featured as the lone, old woman who is left alone in her flat, was also awarded the Jean Webb Trophy for best actress.

The Broadway Theatre company were awarded the runners-up prize for their play, ’Mother Figure’, which also saw lead actor Matt Quinn awarded the Mark Clift Trophy for best actor.

The Broadway Youth theatre group received the Cyril Spencer Trophy for the best youth play in the festival, with the top acting prizes going to Joseph Long and Meisie Germishuys.

The festival also saw plays from The Service Players, with an original play, ’Customer Services’, written by Lisa Creighton and The Legion Players, who performed ’Ivy’, featuring Stephanie Gray and Howard Caine.

The winning plays were judged by the guest adjudicator Chris Baglin.
