A proposal to improve access around the island’s ancient capital may include a one-way traffic system.
The Department of Infrastructure’s 15-year road map for Castletown includes a plan to work out how to best manage traffic around Castle Rushen.
In the plan, it is acknowledged that the road that runs around the castle, past the old House of Keys and into Castletown Square is in need of repair and an update.
Castletown Commissioners have agreed with this, but want to see the DoI use materials sympathetic to the area, which the department commits to in its plan.
The plan said: ’The department will look into various schemes that could enhance the area, including the suggestion of colour coded zoning to distinguish the walkway from the carriageway.
’Particular thought should be given to the entrance to the castle which is currently a challenging environment for pedestrians. An improved walking route from the railway station to the town centre will also benefit the visiting public.
’Additionally, the introduction of a one-way system may also be an option and will be looked into due to the conflicts arising between vehicles and damage to buildings.’
However, these plans are on the Department of Infrastructure’s long term agenda.
Changes likely to be seen in the short to medium term in the town include provisions for bicycle racks to encourage active travel which is in part linked to plans to make major improvements to the Silverburn River footpath.
This is seen as important for increasing the walking and cycling provision for connecting Castletown with businesses in the ’Airport Gateway’ area as well as improving access to Poulsom Park and Victoria Road primary school.
Improving the links between Castletown and other parts of the south of the island including Port St Mary and Port Erin for active travel will also be achieved by linking these into the work already carried out at Scarlett. However this not seen as a short term measure.
Other long term projects in Castletown will improve links with the new secondary school being built in the town and enhancing the provision for buses and coaches in the area for both residents and tourists.
