DNA testing dogs to combat dog fouling is being investigated by Rushen Parish Commissioners.
They pointed out it would only work in co-ordination with other authorities in the south who they plan to approach.
The matter is under discussion within the context of a review of dog by-laws in Rushen Parish.
The local authority is canvassing opinion on the introduction of new by-laws to control dogs and penalise irresponsible dog owners. At the moment, by laws in place are inadequate to deal with the problem and there is nothing specific to dogs.
The authority has already provided 20 dedicated bins for dog faeces. There are also plans to provide four bag dispensers for dog owners in Ballafesson, so they can use the bags to collect their dog’s faeces. The authority would also like feedback on signage.
Comments from members of the public and all interested parties - from government agencies to societies - are welcome.
Rushen Parish Commissioners’ spokesman Justin Young said: ’We have many very responsible dog owners with well-behaved dogs in Rushen but sadly a few people continue to let the side down by not looking after their dogs properly, or clearing up after them.
’The commissioners wish to work with dog owners and parishioners to make Rushen Parish a good place where dogs and people can live safely and happily together.’
All comments should be made by Friday, April 6 and addressed to the clerk Phil Gawne at Lamode, Ballakillowey Road, Rushen, or email [email protected]
