Two Douglas bobbies will have their mutton chops and locks shaved off if enough is raised towards the only male cancer charity in the island.
PCs Michael Griffiths and Patrick Moore - known as duo Mike and Paddy - announced that they are willing to face the clippers in support of Manx charity Mannin Cancers Support Group, which is raising money for equipment for diagnosis of prostate cancer.
The newly-formed charity is working with the Manx Breast Cancer Support Group to raise £1.5million to replace the computerised tomography (CT) scanners at Noble’s Hospital in Braddan.
The new scanners will be able to detect all types of cancers at a very early stage, to give the best chance of a cure.
However, the community police officers will only depart with their cherished hair if enough funds are donated.
The officers’ target has been set at £5,000.
Nearly £400 has been donated towards their cause.
Paddy will have his trademark mutton chops chopped and Mike will have his lovely locks lopped once the amount has been raised.
Both are avid supporters of charities that highlight types of cancer and provide care for patients and their families.
The pair are frequently spotted around town and at events in their bright pink custodian helmets to draw attention to the MBCSG.
The officers’ tireless efforts within the community has often received public recognition. In 2018 they were jointly awarded Isle of Man Newspapers’ Community Police Officer of the Year Award after they were nominated by Ballakermeen High School, the constabulary’s Volunteer Police Youth Scheme cadets and Douglas town centre manager, Oliver Cheshire.
