Plans have been submitted to demolish the Salvation Army citadel in Lord Street, Douglas, and build a replacement worship building.
The Salvation Army Trust Company Ltd has applied (17/00186/B) to planners for what is described as ’an attractive new building which incorporates its existing needs and those for the future’.
In the design and access statement by Savage & Chadwick the current citadel - built in 1932 - is said to ’lack architectural merit’.
The internal layout includes a ground floor worship hall space for more than 100 people, community service area used for activities such as community lunches and mums and tots sessions and a kitchen.
The first floor would house the Sunday School, offices and toilets.
The Salvation Army operates a nursery Monday to Friday.
There is a range of children’s facilities on the second floor, including a dedicated activity, wet play and external play areas.
And on the third floor a rooftop garden for the nursery is proposed.
The building has been designed to be accessible to all. Access to higher levels will be improved with the incorporation of a lift.
Externally, the design includes a mixture of red and blue brickwork, copper effect cladding and a glazed reception area.
