Details for the reinstallation of bridges on the island’s former railway lines have been submitted to planners.
The Department of Infrastructure has submitted the application (20/01169/B) to reinstate the former railway bridges at Glen Wyllin, Glen Mooar and across the A1 near Ballaleece, St John’s.
Plans for the steel bridges, which will add seven miles to the current heritage trail were first unveiled in August, with the DoI hoping to be able to begin work before the end of the year. Since the railway closed and the bridges were removed in the 1970s, users of the footpaths have, at St John’s had to cross a busy road and climb down and back up steep inclines over the valleys.
To complement the history of the trails, the DoI intends to construct the bridges that will ’emulate the original railway bridges that were removed in 1975’. The budget for the scheme is £1.3m and the DoI has said it will ’provide accessibility for walkers, runners, disabled users, cyclists and horse riders’.
And added: ’In addition to the replacement bridges, the surface of the trail will be upgraded, making it available all year round and stimulating long-term health benefits by encouraging people to become more active on a regular basis.’
Infrastructure Minister Tim Baker MHK said: ’This next phase once again aims to increase the number of recreational opportunities for people to get out and enjoy our countryside in a range of ways. While the plans follow the successful Peel-Douglas project, they have been designed to reflect the specific surroundings and will provide something really special and long-lasting. Replacing the three bridges promises to bring spectacular results for residents as well as tourists, once we are in position to welcome them back.’
