The police and Shoprite have joined residents in stating their concern over plans for KFC and Starbucks drive-through restaurants on Peel Road.

Residents have raised concerns on traffic flow on Peel Road and in the surrounding area since the application (18/00977/B) was first made.

The police have raised concerns that the impact of the stores could be similar to those at McDonald’s during peak hours.

Inspector Gavin Callow wrote to planners saying: ’It would be fair to say that we still have concerns about the traffic that will enter and leave the site.

’If there are similar numbers to McDonald’s, we will see tailbacks caused by traffic waiting to get in from both directions and it is quite close to the traffic lights.

’Other than that the actual site itself seems well laid-out within its boundaries.’

Further objections have been raised by Isle of Man Enterprises Ltd, the parent company of Shoprite.

The company is concerned over potential traffic disruption, in particular reference to the unrelated planned closure of Pulrose Bridge.

While the timescale for the new bridge is not currently known, Isle of Man Enterprises noted in its letter to planners that the company had been advised the bridge replacement would take about 18 months.

It is concerned how the bridge closure, combined with the opening of proposed stores, would affect its distribution warehouse on Pulrose Road.

Chief executive Andrew Thomas said: ’Depending on the timetable of the proposed development this may have no impact, however if the development is granted and can be open in conjunction with the closure it should be considered.’

The Department of Infrastructure says the plans fail to demonstrate ’that access to and from the site would be safe for service vehicles’.

It said the bid doesn’t show that there would be no ’adverse impact on the operation of the adjacent highway network’.

And it said it was unclear if there was adequate site parking provision for both sites.

The department is also concerned the application doesn’t comply with the ’Manual for Manx Roads’ design guide.
