Ramsey Commissioners’ proposal to install three changing huts on Mooragh Promenade have been backed by planners.
The huts, once a staple of any seaside town, will be installed adjacent to Hope Street from April to September each year.
Fixed to the walkway, they would be for people wishing to change before and after using the town’s north shore beach.
Complete with yellow, blue and pink inward opening doors, the three huts are 3.1m in length when placed together, 1.8m deep and 2.15m high with a 60cm peaked roof on top.
In his report, planner Chris Balmer said that the huts, while technically going against the development plan, ’would fit well with the actual use of the land and adjacent beach/sea’.
Chairman of Ramsey Commissioners, Andy Cowie, told the Manx Independent: ’The Commission are keen to enhance Ramsey’s offering and see the potential installation of changing huts as a useful way of encouraging bathers to take advantage of the town’s fabulous beaches which enjoy the cleanest water on the island.’
He added: ’Any work to be undertaken will have to wait on the resolution of the current Covid situation, however, we continue to make plans to improve the town throughout for both visitors and residents alike.’
The local authority said in its application that it plans to store the huts throughout the winter to avoid the worst of Manx weather.
In the application it added: ’As we are included in weather alerts from the Met Office, any possible risk of unusual weather or tidal issues that may crop up over the summer months and cause an issue, again would be mitigated by way of our staff removing the huts to storage if required beforehand.’
