Planning rules are to relaxed to allow pubs and restaurants to provide takeaway services on a short-term basis during the conronavirus pandemic.

The proposed flexible arrangements will also allow existing food businesses to make up for income lost due to social distancing and self-isolation measures across the community.

Environment, Food and Agriculture Minister Geoffrey Book MHK said: ‘These proposals are designed to provide solutions for those observing social distancing and self-isolation advice at the same time as enabling businesses to remain active during this period.

‘It’s absolutely vital we are flexible at this time, and relaxing planning enforcement in this way will hopefully provide some welcome income for businesses and their staff.

‘The community is adopting new behaviour and many vulnerable groups are avoiding social contact.

’At the same time as stimulating the economy in difficult times, any businesses getting involved will be playing an important role in our communities by making and delivering food to those who are unable to get out.’

Existing registered food businesses which wish to provide takeaways and/or deliveries should email [email protected], using the subject line ‘Hot and Cold Food Takeaway Deliveries’.

The email should provide full details of the current business, including its address, and how it intends to adapt.

High standards of food safety management must be maintained, and advice is available from the Environmental Health team by emailing [email protected]

The Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture is aiming to respond to requests within two working days.
