The former Crown post office in Regent Street, Douglas, could be converted to a cocktail bar, restaurant and fast food restaturant and take-away.
Thompson Holdings has applied (18/00369/B )for alterations to the Victorian builing, built in 1886, to accommodate the change of use.
The ground floor would feature open seating at the front of snacks and drinks, a bar and areas for ’formal dining’ and private dining.
The restaurant would continue on the mezzanine floor, where the kitchen would also be located.
A cocktail and music lounge would be based on the first floor.
And there would be function rooms on the second floor.
The roof would be used as a smoking area.
The proposed opening times are 11am to 1am for the bar areas and midday to 9pm for the main restaurant, seven days a week.
The fast food restaurant would stay open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
In a planning statement by JTM Architecture it explains that Thompson Holdings Ltd bought the site in March 2018 ’with a view to developing a scheme which could be fully accessible to the public and to draw people into the town centre on a daily basis’.
It adds: ’Maintaining the existing facades and main structure of the building is testament to its history as a public building and the proposed scheme aims to re-introduce this building to the public with an internal fit to complement its exterior.’
We reported last month that James Thompson of Thompson Holdings had bought the former post office for £1.05m.
Mr Thompson who moved to the island four years ago from Northern Ireland said at the time: ’The Manx people are such fabulous people and that is why I also want to continue to invest in the community.
’There have been many possible opportunities that have caught my eye since I fell in love with the island and we have been lucky enough to be successful with a few of these already.
’This iconic building built in 1886 captured my interest more than any other and you only have to look at it in its prime location along with its history to understand why.’
