A planning application (19/01130/B) by Tesco is seeking an extension to its existing warehouse and remodelling of service yard and overflow car park.
The company said that the plans are not designed to increase its retail floor space but to increase the size of its storage area and delivery lorry unloading space.
In its application, the supermarket said that during busy periods, it has had issues maintaining stock levels which due to the stock being ferried to the island is ’a significant logistical issue that is relatively unique to the Isle of Man’.
The work will predominantly involve the creation of ’larger and improved’ storage facilities.
Tesco said it would be ’above and beyond’ a store of the size that it has on Lake Road in Douglas.
A change to the entrance for delivery wagons, combined with the increase in storage space, would see up to 10 car parking spaces lost at the store.
Previous applications to expand the shop’s floor size have been rejected by the planning committee.
