Plans for the construction of a 60-bed care home complex at the former site of Glenside have been unanimously approved by the planning committee.

At its meeting last week, the body agreed to proposals by the Department of Health and Social Care, which had sought to address concerns over visibility and vehicular access to the site from Victoria Road.

The new complex, named ’Summerhill View’, will replace the ageing Reayrt ny Baie.

The facility will be split into four separate communities, with ensuites in each of the 60 bedrooms. One of these communities will be specifically for those with dementia.

Outside, a 36-space car park, two minibus spaces, an off lay-by, and an ambulance space.

Earlier this year, Chief Minister Howard Quayle acknowledged that increasing the supply of care home beds was ’long overdue’ and that a new home would go some way to address this.
