The Steam Packet says that plans for its new vessel, Manxman, are progressing well in spite of the pandemic’s impact.

The purpose-built ferry is due to replace the Ben-my-Chree as the company’s flagship when it comes into service in 2023.

The detailed design of both the external and internal features of Manxman are currently being undertaken by a team of experts.

This ’vital’ phase being the longest and where some of the most important decisions are made.

A range of planning work will take place over around 12 months, including the development of a 3D detailed design drawing, as well as construction drawings to allow the vessel to be built.

Interior design and internal layouts will be also finalised and vessel equipment and machinery agreed.

The vessel will be built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) in South Korea, one of the world’s major shipbuilders.

It is the company’s first new-build vessel in 23 years, with a hybrid diesel-electric powerplant and ’considerably more’ passenger space, enhanced onboard facilities and greater freight capability.

After a public consultation where more that 7,500 people submitted their preferred name, Manxman was decided on in December.
