More than 50 potential options for improved flood defences have been on display at Laxey Working Men’s institute this week.

The £10m plans are a joint project between the Department of Infrastructure, Manx Utilities and engineering consultants JBA.

Following feedback from the public drop-in sessions and evaluation, a set of options will be agreed for progression.

The flood alleviation works, which are expected to continue for two years, aim to implement the recommendations of the independent ARUP report into last October’s major flooding incident.

Work on some defences is already underway, such as the debris catcher for the Glen Roy catchment and the new culvert at Gretch Veg. Other proposals included a new retaining wall between the river and Glen Road and a new harbour wall.
