Plantation fire could have been much more serious

Fire chiefs say a smouldering fire discovered at Stoney Mountain plantation could have become much more serious if it hadn’t been caught in time.

Retained crews from Castletown fire station were called out to the plantation on Sunday following a report by a member of the public.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘There was no indication at the scene as to how the fire had started. Had the fire spread or developed further, the incident could have been much more serious.’

On the same day, Castletown firefighters attended a fire on the beach at Derbyhaven, believed to have been started by youths.

The spokesperson said both incidents were small but preventable and tied up fire and police resources.
