Residents in Onchan have said some of their 999 calls are not responded to despite ongoing issues in the village’s park.
A woman who lives in the village told a public meeting called by Onchan MHK Julie Edge that she and her neighbours have made ’hundreds’ of phone calls to the constabulary about anti-social behaviour.
The woman said that while officers often attend, there have been occasions where they haven’t and residents have been scared to come of their homes, even while their property has been damaged and cars keyed.
Superintendent Steve Maddocks said that while officers do their best, a lack of resources can mean they can’t respond to every call.
He told the meeting ’we don’t have an unlimited amount of coppers’ and that the constabulary ’has to work within our budget’.
However, he did add that the police provide a ’proportionate response’ to incidents.
Mr Maddocks’s comments disappointed some residents including one man whose wife’s death is still being investigated after an incident around Onchan Park last month. Officers were called to an incident involving a number of youths in the vicinity of Onchan Park on the evening of Tuesday, August 11.
A short time later, Lesley Cubbon, 73, was found dead inside her home which was near where the incident happened.
Mrs Cubbon’s husband told the meeting that residents have ’had a long period’ of anti-social behaviour and said ’nothing has been done’ by the police or Onchan Commissioners to resolve the issues.
The local authority said it is working on a number ways to improve the situation in and around Onchan. These included improving the lighting in dark areas and a collaborative effort between itself, residents and the police.
